FAQ

Was the book That’s Not Half!’ really turned into a musical?

Much to our own surprise, yes! We were approached in 2023 by the talented and passionate group at South West Sydney Orchestras who masterfully transformed our book into a musical for children. The first performances were held in April, 2024.

We are based in Sydney, Australia.

Where can I find an illustrator for my children’s book and how much will it cost?

There are many ways to find a suitable illustrator. Although it is possible to find extremely cheap illustrators overseas through crowd sourced freelancing websites, we recommend against it. Quality varies wildly and communication isn’t always the best. It can often lead to frustration and disappointment. We recommend the best way to find an illustrator is to go through an illustration agency. The illustrators have been hand-picked and vetted and you’ll be able to select one with a style that best matches your vision.

We suggest allocating anywhere from $2,000-$10,000 for illustration (based on a standard 32-page colour children’s book with cover design). Prices vary depending on the illustrator but this is a more realistic expectation.

Do you offer illustration services?

Yes we do, but it is subject to availability. Please get in touch via our Contact form to inquire. Try to provide as many specifics as possible such as page count, whether you need cover art, what art style you are looking for (with examples if you have any) as well as your desired budget.

How long does it take to have a book illustrated?

This can vary depending on the speed and availability of the artist, as well as the style you want. Typically it can take a few months.

Do you have advice on how to price my children’s book?

A lot of new authors get really overwhelmed with this question and while there is no perfect answer, with a bit of research you can determine price brackets for each market and decide what’s right for you. Pricing will vary between paperback and hardcover due to the differences in production costs. You should always ensure that you are taking into account your costs first, such as printing, shipping, and any applicable taxes etc. Then you need to figure out what sort of profit margin you want. Children’s books are not big money makers, so be prepared for small profits per book. We’ll be adding a downloadable guide soon so watch this space!
